São denominados verbos regulares todos aqueles verbos que não sofrem alterações em seu radical ao serem conjugados. Outra característica dos verbos regulares é que eles mantêm a mesma desinência do verbo paradigma (modelo), ou seja, terminado em –AR (paradigma da primeira conjugação), –ER (paradigma da segunda conjugação) ou –IR (paradigma da terceira conjugação).
Para compreendermos melhor:
- Radical: trata-se da parte principal da palavra, onde reside seu significado. Assim, CANT- é o radical do verbo CANTAR, por exemplo.
- Desinência: trata-se da parte final da palavra e, no caso dos verbos, indica número (singular ou plural), pessoa (primeira, segunda ou terceira), modo (indicativo, subjuntivo ou imperativo) e tempo (pretérito, presente ou futuro).
Confira o exemplo:
O verbo falar (radical: fal-) não tem o seu radical modificado ao ser conjugado em qualquer pessoa e tempo: falei, falassem, falariam.
Quando os verbos amar (1ª conjugação), vender (2ª conjugação) e partir (3ª conjugação) são conjugados, um modelo é seguido. Desta forma, quando o radical é substituído, temos as terminações de número, tempo, pessoa e modo válidas para a maior parte dos verbos.

- Pretérito perfeito: amei, amaste, amou, amamos, amastes, amaram.
- Pretérito imperfeito: amava, amavas, amava, amávamos, amáveis, amavam.

- Presente: amo, amas, ama, amamos, amais, amam.
- Futuro do presente: amarei, amarás, amará, amaremos, amareis, amarão.
