Em

Há dois gêneros gramaticais na Língua Portuguesa. São eles o gênero feminino e o gênero masculino. Os substantivos que pertencem ao gênero masculino são aqueles em que é possível antepor o artigo o ou um. Exemplos: o hotel, um porteiro. São substantivos pertencentes ao gênero feminino todos aqueles que é possível antepor o artigo a ou uma. Exemplos: a pousada, uma enfermeira.

Determinação de gênero pela terminação

Gênero masculino

1) Nomes terminados em –o átono são pertencentes ao gênero masculino. Exemplos: o juiz, o caderno, o caiaque.

2) Substantivos concretos terminados em –ão são pertencentes ao gênero masculino. Exemplos: o pêssego, o papel, o mercado.

Gênero feminino

1) Nomes terminados em –a átono são pertencentes ao gênero feminino. Exemplos: a mesa, a prancha, a cadeira.

2) Substantivos abstratos terminados em –ão são pertencentes ao gênero feminino. Exemplos: a razão, a vocação, a instrução.

Determinação do gênero pela significação

Gênero masculino

1) Os nomes de homens e as suas funções são pertencentes ao gênero masculino. Exemplos: Renan, Allan, Carlos, professor, ambulante, pedreiro.

2) Nomes de animais do sexo masculino são pertencentes ao gênero masculino. Exemplos: cão, carneiro, coelho.

3) Nomes de montes, de oceanos, de rios, de lagos e ventos, nos quais se subentende o gênero masculino. Exemplos: o Pacífico = o oceano Pacífico, o Amazonas = o rio Amazonas, o Índico = o oceano Índico.

4) Os nomes de meses e dos pontos cardeais são pertencentes ao gênero masculino. Exemplos: o mês de dezembro, o mês de janeiro, o sul.

Gênero feminino

1) Os nomes de mulheres e as suas funções são considerados de gênero feminino. Exemplos: Jéssica, Débora, Márcia, imperatriz, advogada, vendedora.

2) Nomes de animais do sexo feminino são considerados de gênero feminino. Exemplos: galinha, pata, ovelha.

3) Nomes de cidades e ilhas em que subentende-se o gênero feminino. Exemplos: a histórica Olinda, a vibrante Paris, a Veneza.

Formação do feminino dos substantivos biformes

1) Substantivos terminados em consoantes formam o feminino com o acréscimo do –a. Exemplos: freguês – freguesa, deus – deusa, contador – contadora.

2) Substantivos terminados em –o átono formam o feminino ao substituir a desinência por –a. Exemplos: lobo – loba, menino – menina, gato – gata.

3) Substantivos terminados em –ão podem formar o feminino de três formas:

3.1) Mudando o final –ão para –oa. Exemplos: leitão – leitoa, ermitão – ermitoa, patrão – patroa;

3.2) Mudando o final –ão para –ã. Exemplos: anão – anã, campeão – campeã, cidadão – cidadã;

3.3) Mudando o final –ão para –ona. Exemplos: folião – foliona, espertalhão – espertalhona, pobretão – pobretona.

4) Substantivos terminados em –or formam normalmente o feminino com o acréscimo da desinência –a, –eira ou –triz. Exemplos: leitor – leitora, imperador – imperatriz, arrumador – arrumadeira;

5) Substantivos que referem-se a títulos de nobreza formam o feminino com as terminações–esa, –essa e –isa. Exemplos: barão – baronesa, abade – abadessa, sacerdote – sacerdotisa.

6) Substantivos terminados em–e são uniformes, mas há exceções em que é acrescentado o –a ao fim da palavra. Exemplos: governante – governanta, elefante – elefanta, gigante – giganta.

7) Outros Casos:

  • Avô – avó
  • Cônsul – consulesa
  • Cônego – canonisa
  • Czar – czarina
  • Frade – freira
  • Herói – heroína
  • Maestro – maestrina
  • Profeta – profetisa
  • Poeta – poetisa
  • Réu – ré
  • Rapaz – rapariga ou moça
  • Rei – rainha

Substantivos uniformes

Os substantivos uniformes podem ser classificados em sobrecomuns, epicenos, comuns de dois gêneros ou de gênero vacilante.

Substantivos sobrecomuns

Substantivos sobrecomuns são aqueles que têm somente um gênero gramatical para designar as pessoas de ambos os sexos. Exemplos: a pessoa, a testemunha, a criança.

Substantivos epicenos

Substantivos epicenos são aqueles que apresentam somente um gênero gramatical para designar os dois sexos dos animais. Para designar o sexo, junta-se ao substantivo as palavras macho ou fêmea.

Exemplos:

  • o crocodilo (o crocodilo macho, o crocodilo fêmea)
  • o sabiá (o sabiá macho, o sabiá fêmea)
  • a onça (a onça macho, a onça fêmea)

Substantivos comuns de dois gêneros

Alguns substantivos apresentam uma só forma para dois gêneros, mas é possível distinguir o masculino do feminino através do emprego do artigo que os acompanha.

Exemplos: o dentista – a dentista, o jornalista – a jornalista, o artista – a artista.

Gêneros e significados

A mudança de significado de gênero pode acontecer devido ao artigo empregado.

Exemplos:

  • o grama (unidade de peso) – a grama (planta)
  • o cabeça (chefe) – a cabeça (parte do corpo)
  • o crisma (óleo usado nos sacramentos) – a crisma (sacramento)
