Nas normas gramaticais da Língua Portuguesa, a transcrição exata da fala das personagens é chamada de discurso direto, onde a voz das personagens é inserida na narrativa sem que exista participação do narrador. Desta forma, o discurso direto possibilidade aos personagens que se exprimam livremente, ganhando vida própria na narração. Dentre os tipos de discurso, o discurso direto é o mais comum e natural.

- Ocorrência sem a participação do narrador;
- Transcrição exata da fala das personagens;
- Introdução por verbos de elocução que anunciam o discurso (dizer, perguntar, responder, comentar, falar, observar, retrucar, replicar, exclamar, aconselhar, gritar, murmurar);
- É antecedido pelo travessão, que indica quando começa a fala de uma personagem e quando há a mudança de interlocutores.
- Após o verbo de elocução, há dois-pontos e uma mudança de linha para um novo parágrafo;
Primeiramente, é necessário destacar os “verbos de dizer” ou “verbos de fala”. Tratam-se dos verbos que introduzem as falas dos personagens, como nos exemplos abaixo:
“E, numa voz baixa, acrescentou:
– Venham, meninas – disse Roger –, vocês duas já andaram bastante.”
Outras marcas do discurso direto que merecem destaque são os sinais de pontuação. Os dois-pontos e o travessão indicam as falas dos personagens. Tais marcas separam as palavras do narrador das palavras dos personagens. Confira o exemplo abaixo:
Naquela bela e pequena ilha vive um pescador solitário há mais de 15 anos. Dizem que ele perdeu a esposa e o filho durante um temporal em alto mar. “Vivo da pesca e das coisas que planto, além de vender almoço para os turistas. Desde que fiquei viúvo e perdi meu filho, fiz do quintal da minha casa a área onde sirvo as refeições. Consigo me sustentar na ilha e conheço muitas pessoas de diferentes partes.”, explica Diógenes, o solitário homem.

O discurso indireto se distingue do discurso direto pois nele acontece a intervenção do narrador na voz das personagens. No discurso indireto, o narrador faz uso das suas próprias palavras para transmitir a fala das personagens.

Discurso indireto: Ele disse que ia para a praia depois da faculdade.

O discurso indireto livre se diferencia do discurso direto porque nele ocorre a introdução das falas da personagem no meio da narração sem qualquer indício da mudança da voz do narrador para a voz da personagem.
Discurso direto: — Eu vou para a praia depois da faculdade.
Discurso indireto livre: Pedro chegou cansado do trabalho. Apenas tinha vontade de se deitar no sofá. Eu vou para a praia depois da faculdade. Ele sabia, contudo, que tinha de cumprir com suas tarefas diárias primeiro.
